History: In current times The Dark is considered a super villain who is the bearer of a mantle of dark power that secretly passes to first born children through the ages. It was only through the intervention of the super hero, Sol that The Dark's secret villainous life was discovered and was no longer considered an international vigilante. His"sidekick" son, Gorecrow has trained since birth to Bear the mantel upon his father's eventual death. They lived in absolute wealth and power. Gorecrow was absent from the battle that killed his father and has stifled his guilt at not being there during the battle, feeling he could have changed the outcome. Adding to the turmoil within him, Gorecrow did not inherit the powers of his father upon his death. Filled with the rage of loss and injustice he has been scouring the world in search of the one who stole his birthright.
Lucas Johnson doesn't know who his father was. He only recently learned that his Mom had been trafficked as a teen and that he had been conceived as a result of the abuse his mother had undergone in that time. One night he suddenly wakes up with massive powers the same as the famous super villain that was reported as dead during the nightly news. He finds this out after an excruciating and amazing night of the powers invading his body and a wild adventure.
Eventually the rich son finds him and tells him he knows what happened. He tells him half truths about the powers, the family curse, that he didn't really want the power (untrue), that he will train him how to use them to be a hero, yet secretly conspiring to get Lucas killed so he will gain the powers.
A rich and distant mother to the rich son is part of the conspiracy as well.
Lucas struggled with the lies, the powers, the fact that the world thinks he's the super villain and heroes seek him out to kill for fame, imprison him, etc. Other villains were coerced by Gorecrow to kill Lucas, and some villains mistook Lucas for the previous villain and he'll needed to play along.
An eventual debate arose where the evil son talked about the power needing to be harnessed by discipline and forced to obey the bearer. Lucas felt that this isn't true, the power should be allowed to flow and change the bearer, but he fears that if he does change it'll change him into the villain his father was. When he's being trained by the rich son and does the forced control of the power it does make him into a darker person gradually. It doesn't go too far before he figured out the rich son's manipulations. But it will was a valid and sympathetic window into the rich son's life. Gorecrow was forced to train by an unloving father who's pride he wanted but never got. He is nonetheless an amazing person, physically gifted and deadly, intelligent, cunning with immense wealth and information networks at his fingertips.
Lucas is from poverty and neglect. Foster homes, some drug use, bad friends, low self worth. The power is immensely tempting to abuse. He busted his mother out of jail but she backslid into drugs again rather than stay clean and true to her promise to him. She let things slip to a dealer who blackmailed Lucas to do petty villain stuff.
